About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and commercially astute General Counsel (ideally 12+ years PAE) to lead Queensland Rail’s legal and governance function.
Reporting to the Group Executive Safety, Engineering and Governance, this role is pivotal in shaping how legal risk is managed and navigated across a complex, high-profile infrastructure and operational environment. Key accountabilities include:
- Lead and develop Queensland Rail’s legal and governance function consisting of:
- Legal;
- Right to Information and Privacy;
- Board Office (including Company Secretariat) and
- Internal Audit.
- Setting direction and building capability within the function to support a transforming organisation.
- Partner with the Executive Leadership Team and Board on complex legal, regulatory and commercial matters.
- Provide strategic legal advice across major infrastructure programs, operational activities and corporate functions.
- Oversee negotiation and execution of significant commercial agreements, contracts and partnerships
- Ensure compliance with legislative obligations, including Right to Information and Privacy requirements.
- Guide the organisation through disputes, litigation and regulatory matters where required.
- Contribute as a senior leader within the Safety, Engineering and Governance portfolio, influencing enterprise-wide strategy and decision-making.
- Foster a high-performing, inclusive team culture aligned to Queensland Rail’s values.
This is more than a traditional legal role. You will operate as a trusted adviser and strategic partner, enabling the organisation to deliver major programs and day-to-day operations with confidence, integrity and sound judgement.
About You
You are a seasoned legal leader who combines technical excellence with commercial pragmatism and strong relationships.
You will bring:
- 12+ years Post Admission Experience (PAE) as a practising lawyer
- Demonstrated leadership experience in complex, large-scale infrastructure, engineering, energy or transportation environments
- Strong commercial acumen with the ability to translate legal complexity into clear, practical advice
- Deep understanding of governance, regulatory frameworks and risk management
- Experience engaging at Executive and Board level with credibility and influence
- A collaborative, values-led leadership style that builds trust and empowers others
