Your Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for a Graduate/Metallurgical Engineer to join our Track and Civil Assets Engineering team, based in Brisbane. This is a rare chance to apply your materials expertise on a variety of complex and meaningful projects that span the entire Queensland Rail network.

In this role, you’ll work closely with internal engineering teams, maintenance crews, and external suppliers to ensure the integrity and longevity of our infrastructure and rollingstock assets.

Key responsibilities:

  • Assist on technical investigations into material performance and component failures.
  • Learn rail welding processes, heat treatment, and protective coatings. Then assist maintenance crews with advice.
  • Assist with the reviewing and development of materials specifications and technical documentation.
  • Collaborating with mechanical, civil, and electrical engineers on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Conducting site inspections to ensure compliance with safety and engineering standards.
  • Use big data collected from automated inspection to support research and innovation initiatives in materials science and sustainability.

About you

  • Previous knowledge in track materials, particularly on microstructure, mechanical properties, and performance of high carbon pearlitic steel, as well as welding technology (flash butt, aluminothermic, and arc welding) and rail wheel/rail interaction.
  • Enjoy solving complex technical problems and can translate insights into practical, real-world solutions.
  • Open to learning new skills and deliver incredible results with limited resources.
  • Thrive in a collaborative environment and are passionate about safety, reliability, and continuous improvement.
  • Be someone who values meaningful, essential work — even if it isn’t always glamorous and appreciate the hands-on, operational side of the role because you know it directly contributes to safety and reliability.

Qualifications

Hold a degree in Metallurgical or Materials Engineering. Applicants with a Mechanical Engineering qualification, may be considered where their area of specialisation is relevant.

International qualifications must be recognised under the Washington Accord/demonstrated through an entry-to-practice competency assessment awarded by Engineers Australia and accepted by Queensland Rail.

Work environment

Whilst there will be a combination of office and field-based work, it’s important to know that you can expect to spend time outdoors, moving around operational sites and using specialist equipment to carry out your work which at times can be physically demanding.

You’ll be responsible for managing the full metallography process — from collecting field samples through to laboratory preparation and final microscopic analysis.
