Your Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for a Metallurgical Engineer to join our Track and Civil Assets Engineering team, based in Brisbane. This is a rare chance to apply your materials expertise on a variety of complex and meaningful projects that span the entire Queensland Rail network.

In this role, you’ll work closely with internal engineering teams, maintenance crews, and external suppliers to ensure the integrity and longevity of our infrastructure and rollingstock assets.

 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading technical investigations into material performance and component failures
  • Providing expert advice on welding, heat treatment, and protective coatings
  • Reviewing and developing materials specifications and technical documentation
  • Supporting procurement teams in supplier evaluations and quality control
  • Collaborating with mechanical, civil, and electrical engineers on multidisciplinary projects
  • Conducting site inspections and audits to ensure compliance with safety and engineering standards
  • Contributing to research and innovation initiatives in materials science and sustainability

This Role Will Be Ideal for People Who

  • Hold a recognised degree in Bachelor of Engineering preferably in Materials Engineering
  • Substantial level of knowledge in track materials, particularly rail microstructure, mechanical properties, and performance of rail steel, as well as welding technology (flash butt, aluminothermic, and arc welding) and rail wheel/rail interaction.
  • Enjoy solving complex technical problems and can translate insights into practical, real-world solutions
  • Thrive in a collaborative environment and are passionate about safety, reliability, and continuous improvement
