Our Internal Audit team is currently seeking an experienced professional to join as a Principal Internal Auditor. If you’re passionate about driving excellence in internal audit processes and ensuring the highest standards of financial integrity and business risk management in a large, dynamic and complex organisation, we want to hear from you.
Your Opportunity
Queensland Rail is entering a phase of transformation, with a focus on building internal auditing capability and delivering enhanced value through our FY25-27 Internal Audit Strategy. As Principal Internal Auditor, you’ll play a significant role in delivering third line of defence services, providing independent advice across the business on the effectiveness of control systems and supporting our organisation to deliver on its assurance obligations to the Board and Executive leadership.
This role is ideal for an experienced internal audit professional with a background in large and complex organisations, particularly in the professional services, public sector, or transport industries is highly desirable.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Plan, perform and lead internal audit team members in the delivery of complex, end-to-end audit engagements across the business.
- Collaborate closely with business units and stakeholders across all levels—from frontline staff to Executive Leadership—to deliver practical and impactful audit outcomes.
- Develop comprehensive audit reports, communicate findings and recommendations through high-quality and confident presentations.
- Monitor the implementation of agreed actions and contribute to the development of audit methodologies and internal capability.
- Contribute to the design of audit programs that align with strategic priorities and enterprise risk.
- Build strong, trust-based relationships to influence positive change and promote continuous improvement.
What We’re Looking For
- Minimum 5–10 years’ experience in internal audit, with a strong preference for candidates from infrastructure-intensive sectors (e.g., freight, transport).
- Excellent communication skills – written, verbal. Proven ability to work with senior and executive stakeholders, confidently lead conversations – holding difficult conversation and influencing outcomes with credibility.
- Resilient and adaptable, with the confidence to challenge, question, and support business improvements.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a team-oriented mindset – works well in audit teams and values collaboration, open communication, and continuous learning.
Pre-Employment Qualification:
Degree in Accounting, Economics, Finance, Business or a related discipline and hold one of the following professional certifications (or equivalent):
- Certified Internal Auditor (CIA);
- Chartered Accountant (CA); or
- Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA)
You will need to provide a certified copy of your degree prior to receiving an offer.
Remuneration & Employment Type
This is a permanent, fulltime position, based in Brisbane CBD with a starting base salary of $151,359 plus 12.75% superannuation and hybrid work options to support the balance between work and personal commitments.
