About this role:


Entering Queensland Rail’s Major Projects division, you will be embedded within The Wave Brownfield Alliance as the Rail Safety Manager – Wave Alliance. This is a project-specific role within a live rail and brownfield delivery environment, where you will work directly with alliance partners to influence safety outcomes, strengthen rail safety awareness, and ensure construction planning and delivery appropriately reflect Queensland Rail’s operational, regulatory, and rail safety requirements.

 

This role is a fixed term role until 01 January, 2030. This role is part of the Wave Project and will initially be based in Brisbane, transitioning to Beerwah from April 2027. 

 

You can expect some of your responsibilities to include: 

 

  • Provide strategic rail safety advice within The Wave Brownfield Alliance, with a focus on construction activities in and around the operational rail environment.
  • Act as Queensland Rail’s embedded rail safety lead in the alliance, influencing planning, delivery, and decision-making so that safety risks are identified early and managed effectively.
  • Work closely with alliance partners, delivery teams, designers, contractors, and Queensland Rail stakeholders to promote safe and compliant outcomes across brownfield rail interfaces.
  • Support the development, review, and implementation of safety systems, work methods, and risk controls that are specific to rail corridor, possession, interface, and operational railway risks.
  • Provide practical technical guidance on rail safety legislation, participant management systems, Queensland Rail requirements, alliance obligations, and Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator expectations.
  • Lead and support site-based safety assurance activities, including inspections, monitoring, incident reviews, risk workshops, audits, and targeted awareness activities relevant to brownfield rail delivery.
  • Build strong working relationships across the alliance to positively influence safety culture, challenge assumptions, and support informed decisions where rail safety risks or operational interfaces are present.
  • Monitor safety performance, emerging risks, and assurance outcomes, and use this insight to drive practical improvements in the way rail safety is managed within the alliance.
  • Represent Queensland Rail’s expectations for safe work in the rail environment, supporting alignment between alliance delivery requirements and Queensland Rail’s safety, assurance, and operational obligations.

What you can bring to the role:

                                                                                                                                        

  • High level of skill in leadership and strategic influence, enabling the guidance of teams and stakeholders in driving safety culture, compliance, and continuous improvement.
  • Extensive knowledge of health, safety, and environmental legislation.
  • High level of skill in managing and guiding teams, leading safety specialists and collaborating with stakeholders.
  • Extensive knowledge of safety systems, risk management, and assurance practices, enabling effective oversight of safety, risk, and incident management.
  • High level of skill in stakeholder engagement and relationship management, fostering positive working relationships with key statutory bodies, external partners, and internal teams.
  • Extensive knowledge of continuous improvement processes and safety program development.
  • High level of skill in evaluating and auditing suppliers and subcontractors, ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory requirements, and using data-driven insights to recommend systemic improvements.
