Our well-established Regional Rollingstock maintenance team based in Cairns at the Portsmith depot is currently seeking a Reliability Improvement Officer to join the team on a permanent full-time basis.
About the role
Reporting to the Manager, Travel and Tourism Maintenance, Portsmith you will play a key role in continuously improving the safety, reliability, availability and cost‑effectiveness of rollingstock maintained at the Rollingstock Maintenance Depot (RMD) Portsmith. This will be achieved by investigating and collating fault‑related information; designing, implementing, and justifying technical improvements and working closely with the Maintenance and Presentation teams.
Key responsibilities:
- Improve rollingstock reliability, safety, and availability fault analysis, performance reporting, and implementation of technical and design improvements.
- Manage maintenance projects and scheduled maintenance programs, including labour, resources, and coordination with Maintenance and Presentation teams to achieve efficient outcomes.
- Prepare technical specifications, manage and monitor maintenance and overhaul contracts, and liaise with suppliers and contractors.
- Provide technical leadership by liaising with operational staff (Passenger Services, Drivers, Defect Coordinators), supporting fault diagnosis, supervising mechanical activities, and offering specialist advice as required (including on‑call support).
- Support workforce capability and compliance by supervising mechanical work, developing and delivering training, maintaining accurate maintenance records using computer systems, and promoting a strong safety and environmental culture in line with QR standards.
About you
- Strong technical expertise in rollingstock fault‑finding, maintenance, and quality improvement processes.
- Proven ability to coordinate work teams, operate autonomously, and work effectively within a team environment.
- Highly developed communication, interpersonal, analytical, and negotiation skills.
- Advanced computer and maintenance management system skills, including mainframe and PC‑based applications.
To be eligible for this role you’ll need to hold a relevant Mechanical trade certificate.
It would be advantageous if the appointee were to hold or have obtained the equivalent of an Associate Diploma of Engineering Mechanical.
