Our Apprentice Opportunities
Rail Traction Linesperson (Construction & Maintenance) | Based in Brisbane
Queensland Rail is offering a hands-on, paid apprenticeship that will launch your career as a Rail Traction Linesperson, with exposure to both construction and maintenance of our 25,000V overhead traction infrastructure. Based in Brisbane and servicing the broader Southeast Queensland network, this is your chance to be part of something big – powering trains and supporting the critical rail transport system that keeps Queensland moving.

Throughout this apprenticeship, you’ll gain valuable experience and skills in:
- Construction, installation, fault-finding, and maintenance of high-voltage overhead wiring systems
- Working across more than 1,000 km of electrified rail, from Varsity Lakes to Gympie and Moreton Bay to Rosewood
- High-voltage access procedures, isolation practices, and safety-critical systems in a live rail environment
- Interpreting technical drawings, completing accurate work records, and reporting on asset condition
- Applying Workplace Health and Safety (WH&S) requirements and electrical safety regulations
Substation Electrician (Power Systems) based at our Sunshine Depot:
In this apprenticeship you will assist electricians to carry out the installation, maintenance and repair of power systems equipment and report on the performance and condition of the power systems asset to ensure its safe and effective operation.
You will work on equipment under the direction of electricians installing, maintaining, testing, troubleshooting and repairing high voltage transmission and substation equipment on the Queensland Rail network. This includes the operation of substation equipment resulting in the switching of the electrical network and grounding of de-energized equipment.
This four-year apprenticeship will result in a nationally recognised qualification that will qualify you to work in a dynamic and evolving industry.
As an Apprentice you will need to:
- Have the ability to work a rotating roster of dayshift (50%) and nightshift (50%), this can also include occasional weekends & public holidays
- Be willing to rotate between specialised SEQ depots to broaden your exposure to all aspects of the trade
- Work well within a team environment and always follow instructions with a commitment to safety. Safety comes first, Always!
