A rare opportunity has become available for a fixed term Queensland Rail employment contract to January 2027 in the exciting role of Senior Electrical Design Engineer as part of our Rollingstock Design Engineering team.

Your Opportunity

 

The team along with this role are primarily responsible for performing electrical engineering design functions of Low Voltage (LV) and Extra Low Voltage (ELV) systems for rolling stock power and control systems, to improve the safety and performance of rolling stock and to ensure rolling stock availability, reliability and cost effectiveness. 

 
This role is a hands-on Design Engineering role, working with a team of professional rolling stock Design Engineers.

 

A typical day in this role will involve a mix of tasks such as:  

 

  • Design of Low Voltage (LV) and Extra Low Voltage (ELV) systems for rolling stock power and control systems.
  • Conduct tests and analysis to make recommendations to improve the reliability and performance of rolling stock and associated equipment.
  • Develop design and modification documentation to the required standards, following design control procedures.
  • Manage modifications to parts and equipment, including problem solving and fault finding.
  • Liaise with technical, trade and other Queensland Rail staff regarding rolling stock modification issues.
  • Provide technical assistance and advice to our rollingstock maintenance teams.

 

We are inviting applications from candidates who have:

 

  • Demonstrated senior level experience within Electrical Design Engineering working with Low Voltage (LV) and Extra Low Voltage (ELV) systems.
  • Extensive skill in undertaking technical investigations, tests, problem solving trial modifications and preparation of technical reports.
  • Previous electrical engineering experience within rolling stock or other heavy industry would be highly desirable. 
  • Demonstrate skill in quality improvement principles in relation to reliability and performance.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to be able to support a wide range of business stakeholders as well as other engineering teams. 

 

Formal qualification:

 

Professional Bachelor of Engineering Electrical.

 

If your qualification was issued overseas, it will need to be a Washington Accord-recognised Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) and assessed by Engineers Australia as meeting the entry-level competency standard for professional engineers.

Location/hours:

 

  • This role is primarily based at Bowen Hills at our Mayne Depot, just outside Brisbane’s CBD.
  • Standard work week is Monday to Friday 38-hours, with occasional planned weekend or after-hours work to support design commissioning. Approved additional hours are compensated or awarded time off in lieu.
