About our Team: 


We are seeking a Mechanical Fitter / Leading Hand 2IC to join our Gulflander team based in Normanton which consists of the Officer in Charge and two Station Assistants. 


This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that delivers all aspects of the Gulflander tourism rail service including mechanic and train guard. In addition to this, you will be trained up as the Train Driver when the Officer in Charge is unavailable or is taking periods of leave. 


This role will suit someone who has a Certificate III in Mechanical Engineering, who is looking for a unique change of scenery and who has a love of trains and connecting with others. 


About the role: 


•    Undertake Guard duties on scheduled and excursion runs – this includes loading and unloading of luggage and ensuring that everyone is safely onboard the train 
•    Servicing and maintenance of the Gulflander railmotor and other rollingstock to meet rail safety compliance
•    Maintenance of all station facilities, gardens and equipment at Normanton and Croydon
•    Assist with reservations, ticketing and general office duties 
•    Customer service to travelling customers, visiting tourists, local community and stakeholders
•    Undertake Train Driver duties when the Officer in Charge is unavailable

Roster / Hours


This is a permanent full-time opportunity that generally works between the hours of 0700 and 1530 Monday to Friday. There will also be a requirement to work weekends, public holidays and overnights in Croydon as required from time to time. 


The Gulflander operates from approximately the end of March through to December every year. In 2024 our operating season will be May 15, 2024 – October 31 2024. During the off season you will be working with the team to focus on the maintenance of the train, station facilities, gardens and the equipment. 


About you: 


Adaptable individual with a positive attitude, energetic approach who thrives in an environment where each day is different. 


•    Substantial level of skill in working with mechanical and/or industrial machinery operation and maintenance. Previous experience with railmotors and rollingstock is highly desirable 
•    Exceptional customer service skills and communication skills – highly desirable
•    Ability to undertake a variety of manual handling tasks including lifting up to 20 kilograms
•    Sound level of skill in the use of computing and software packages 
•    National ‘C’ Class Drivers Licence – required 
•    Cert III in Engineering (Mechanical) or equivalent – required
•    Mechanical Fitter and Turner (Trade Cert) – highly desirable but not essential.
